Working With Your Hands Could Be Great For Your Brain

By Tom Herrin

Many years ago, when much of the country was more rural, the vast majority of people spent some time working with their hands.  The sight of men with hands hardened by all the physical work was commonplace.  Women were often pictured sitting in a chair working diligently on a project or toiling away in something related to food prep.  While that sight may be gone for many, the idea of people working with their hands still has considerable merit.  Far too many people spend far too much time filling their minds with data as they use modern devices that are supposed to save time.  They may be, in reality, a source of much of the stress they endure as part of the inescapable availability so many people live with in their jobs.  Working with their hands could be a reprieve.

Creating With the Hands Can Relieve Stress

When people become fully engaged working with their hands, considerable concentration is required to give the necessary attention to the intended project.  While focusing on the task, they may find that they block out all other distractions, including sound.  It can have an effect similar to that of meditation, which is known to be quite effective for improving overall health.

A Feeling Of Success Is Always Good

Working with the hands to create something is usually called crafting.  Most people are familiar with the work of those who craft.  It is frequently recognized for the degree of workmanship that has been put into it.  When people invest their time in crafting, it is pretty easy to want to improve the quality of the work they do.  As they see this happen, a certain amount of pride in what they can accomplish follows.  This joy of satisfaction can then translate into a greater level of happiness.

Crafting Can Truly Be For Anyone

If you think crafting is something that is out of your league, think again.  All people can’t be successful at all things, but there is almost certainly something that everyone can do and do well.  Working with your hands can be a great way to avert depression and have a feeling of success and pleasure with what they do.  If you are willing to give it a try, all you need to do is attend a craft fair or go to a craft store.  There will be an abundant amount of ideas.  Take something from it, modify it, and make it your own.  You can start simple and, before you know it, you could lose yourself in making something that could be enjoyed by others.  That is always a good feeling.
