The Right Exercise May Spur Better Brain Function

By Tom Herrin

There are lots of things people can do to get themselves in better shape.  For many, it may be a matter of pushing away from the table.  For many others, it may be a new exercise program that involves some kind of workout that is new and different.  There is no doubt that exercise is a key to being healthier.  If someone wanted to beef up their brain function, they normally choose to study more intently.  More revelations seem to indicate that another good way to improve the brain function is to exercise.  Apparently it can have a significant effect on the way the brain works.

Exercise May Deter Dementia

In recent years, there has been quite a bit of information written about different kinds of dementia.  While it once seemed to be considered a natural consequence of aging, it may be avoidable.  For some, it seems to be a disease.  One fact is that those who experience more stress have a better chance of developing dementia.  If people can curb the stress in their lives, they may be able to remain free of this dreaded condition.  Exercise is known to be an effective means of reducing stress and increasing the release of chemicals that make people feel good.

Exercise May Help Program the Brain

The brain works off of the action of neurons.  These help do the work of many things such as recognition of things required to do new skills and activities.  When people learn something new, these neurons help to make this happen.  The brain can essentially be trained by physical exercise.  This is somewhat what happens when someone learns a new skill.  This repeated performance is initiated by movement.  It is believed that exercise can help to encourage the production of new neurons which have the ability to improve learning.

Be a Doer

When we do something about whatever our situation is, we can feel that we have taken control of our lives.  I am always on the lookout for something that can help me in trying to protect brain function.  I realize that it takes some work as I age.  If we fail to take the initiative to help ourselves, we could find ourselves lacking.  If exercise can really help the brain, I am all in.  It is one more good reason for me to get out there and hit the treadmill.
