Layer up for Successful Outdoor Exercise in the Cold
By Tom Herrin
Lots of us enjoy exercising outdoors. For me, it is the best kind. It helps to take out the boredom and provide some pretty good scenery. While it can be great, it can also pose some challenges. As the temperatures move to extremes, it may either force us to do something else or make some serious changes. If we have adequate information, we can make a plan that can work in any of various situations. When temperatures are cold, it can be pretty difficult to dress in such a way that you can remain comfortable enough to continue with your program. Layers can be a great way to do this.
The Inside Layer
It is obvious that our first layer is closest to the body. At one time, we wore a lot of sweat suits for these activities. They were generally made of some cotton and tended to become drenched with sweat. This made them heavy and uncomfortable to wear. Today we have some really good technology that has enabled manufacturers to produce fabrics that are much lighter weight. It is best to wear some of these that are tight-fitting and wick away moisture. They should also provide good airflow.
The Middle Layer
After the first layer, the next one is the one that actually has the job of insulating. This should be some kind of material that is bulky but lightweight. They generally need air spaces that make the insulation factor work best. Old familiar materials such as wool, fleece, or down can still be effective. With modern fabrics, our choices have been broadened, and many materials are now added to this list. Some are even lighter weight. This layer will continue to allow moisture to leave and air to flow.
The Shell
As with most other things, the outer layer has some really important duties. It should be tough enough to resist rain, wind, and abrasive materials. It must protect us from whatever comes at us. It must not add any substantial weight to our outfit. It should have parts that can be removable with ease so that we can maintain a temperature that is tolerable for us as we exercise. If we want to keep ourselves motivated about our exercise program, layers can help make this happen, and we may find a renewed enthusiasm.
