Want to Be Healthy? Take a Few Simple Steps
By Sandy Schroeder
Here are some simple steps to upgrade your health right now. Check the list. You may already be doing some of them. If not, why not? They are so easy and it is so important.
Spend some time outside every day - Early in the morning or late in the afternoon take a short walk to relax and enjoy the breeze, trees and sunlight. They will help you work better and sleep more soundly.
Move throughout the day - Get out of that groove and add new activities to every part of your day. Start with stretches on your patio in the morning and close with a soothing yoga session before bedtime. In between, add workouts, walks or runs and break up sitting time with 5- to 10-minute exercises.
Stay in touch with those around you - Reach out to family, friends and neighbors to let them know you are there to help. As life spins on, we all need to keep our base strong as we support each other.
Bake and cook at home more - Start with whole fresh food and your family's favorite recipes. Then get everyone involved as you create healthy meals and sit down to relax with family dinners where everyone gets a chance to talk.
Find time for quiet and reflection - Begin the day with a 10-minute meditation. Let your thoughts flow unchecked. Later your mind may be clearer and decisions may be easier. Late in the day do another short meditation to let your thoughts swirl through. Just relax and let the tension go.
Find new ways to ease tension - We all need simple stress relievers that remind us to pause and breathe. It could be as simple as calling a friend, or walking out to the garden. Short breaks that help us keep our perspective can help us refocus and move ahead. When we mellow out, life gets easier and we remember the good times.
Practice gratitude - I know a couple who keep a whiteboard in their bedroom. Each night they write down the things that they are thankful for. You might try putting a whiteboard in the family room to let everyone share their thoughts and ideas. As we all look around, we realize how much little things like a peaceful home, good friends, and loyal pets mean.
Laugh a little - Or laugh a lot whenever you feel like it. When times become challenging, we all need to look for humor and share it to lighten the day. Break out the funny old movies and pass the popcorn.
