Why You Need a Little More Me Time

By Genevieve Cunningham

How much time are you really getting for yourself? If you work full-time, you probably don't get as much as you would like. And if you're a parent, you probably don't get any -- ever. Unfortunately, not getting any me time is extremely common. And while we can still function and can still find happiness without it, the truth is that for optimal health, me time is necessary. But why? If we're all getting along without it, why rock the boat? If you're not getting any time for yourself, take a look at these reasons why it's a good idea.

Me-Time is Good for Mental Health

Our minds need some time to decompress. When we don't get any time for ourselves, it keeps our minds turned on. In short spans of time, it's OK to have a mind that's constantly working. But in the long run, this actually hurts our mental health. We start to feel overwhelmed. We start to feel a little short on patience. We start to feel consumed by everything going on in our lives. And then the state of our mental health suffers. We might feel moody, depressed, or incredibly anxious about all we have to do. Don't let this happen to you. Take some me time and protect your mental health for your whole life.

Time Alone Lowers Stress

Along with harming our mental health, an absence of alone time can increase the amount of stress that we feel. We need time alone. We need time to stop thinking and worrying. We need time to veg out. If we don't have this time, our stress builds and builds until we can't control it anymore. And too much stress can lead to headaches, high blood pressure, weight gain, and a myriad of other side effects. Allowing yourself some time to be alone and to decompress can make huge dents in your stress levels, and huge dents in these side effects as well.

It Helps You Learn, Grow, and Get to Know Yourself

Part of growing up and getting older is changing and learning about yourself as those changes happen. But if you never have any time to yourself, you won't have the space that you need to grow and change. Give yourself some time alone just so you can hear yourself think. So you can figure out what you want and who you are. Take some me time regularly, listen to your own thoughts, and use that space to create a life you love.

It's not selfish to take some me time. It's necessary! It's so important for our mental and physical well-being. Carve some time out of your day to embrace your own needs and take care of yourself. With a little me time, you can take care of yourself so that you'll have the energy to take care of everyone else in your life as well.
