3 Unhealthy Addictions That Are Keeping You Down

By Genevieve Cunningham

Addictions are a big deal. We've all heard of or known someone who suffered an addiction and ruined their own life as a result. And while these addictions -- the drugs and alcohol and such -- are probably the most publicized, the truth is that we all suffer from addictions. If you're interested in living your best and healthiest life, take a look at these unhealthy addictions that might be ruining your health.

Caffeine

Most people have this addiction, and generally it's not even a problem. It only becomes a problem when your addiction gets in the way of life or starts to harm your health. What does that look like? If you can't make it through the morning without your cup of coffee, then you might be a little bit too addicted. If you’re suffering from headaches, the shakes, or excessive drowsiness when you don't have caffeine, then again you're probably a little bit too addicted. How can you cut back? Just do it a little bit at a time. Caffeine, like many other kinds of stimulants, cause withdrawals. Cut back slowly and steadily until you are consuming the right amount of caffeine to enhance your life.

Technology

No one likes to admit this addiction, but it's definitely a growing problem in our world. We love technology. We love our TVs, our phones, our laptops, and all of our other devices. We love to have our face staring at a screen. Unfortunately, this addiction is causing eye strain, depression, weak muscles, achy joints, and a wide variety of other negative side effects. While technology certainly has good purposes, it shouldn't be used to excess. If you think you may be suffering from a technology addiction, you'll need to work very hard to cut back. Try replacing your technology time with something active, as this is a very tough habit to break.

Sugar

It seems like everything in our world today contains sugar. And to be honest, we love it. Sugar tastes delicious. The problem is that sugar can also be detrimental to our overall health. It can cause weight gain, contribute to poor skin, and even increase the risk of major diseases like diabetes and heart disease. And unfortunately, it's also an addiction that's very hard to break. You can try cutting back on your own, but if that doesn't work, it's OK to seek out some help from a doctor or healthcare professional. You won't like it in the beginning, but cutting back on sugar may bring some serious benefits to your health and your life that will make you feel better than ever.

Not all addictions are life-threatening. But anytime that we're addicted to anything, we need to be aware so that it doesn't become a problem in our lives. Check for these three common addictions in your life. If they're causing you problems, make some changes. With a little patience and perseverance, you can break your addictive habits and promote better health in your life in no time at all.
