The Most Important Meal of the Day: What's Changed?

By Stephen R. Farris

Doctors and nutritionists have preached for years about the importance of eating a healthy breakfast to start the day. But for whatever reason, we don't always do what we're told. Folks have different reasons for skipping breakfast -- or skipping meals -- which stem from eating late at night, or not making enough time in the morning. So, the best option is to grab something at the drive-thru or local donut shop.

Consuming food items such as these can cause you to crash mid-morning, causing lower productivity or concentration.

But why do we choose to skip the most important meal of the day? Unfortunately, there's no one answer to that question.

Changes in your body overnight, such as a fluctuation in hormone levels could be one of the causes. Overnight, your hormone levels -- adrenaline, ghrelin, and leptin -- can fluctuate causing you to feel less hungry in the morning or upon waking up, depending on your sleep pattern. Other factors may include:

  • Feelings of anxiety and/or depression
  • Pregnancy
  • Sickness or infections
  • Taking certain medications
  • Getting older
  • Thyroid problems
  • Ovulating
  • Chronic health conditions

You may need to make a few lifestyle changes to get back into the routine of eating in the mornings. You could get up and do a few household chores, take a morning walk, or go ahead and take a shower and get dressed before heading to the kitchen. These suggestions will also help your body wake up by getting the blood circulating and your joints and muscles moving.

In the course of making changes, consider cutting out some of the sugars and carbohydrates found in most breakfast foods. Instead of the usual fat-filled foods, try making some of these healthier choices.

  • Yogurt with berries and granola
  • Oatmeal with banana slices and a dash of honey
  • Smoothie with your choice of a green leafy veggie, fresh fruit, and protein powder
  • Veggie omelet with mushrooms, tomatoes, bell peppers, and cheese
  • Avocado toast with a fresh egg on top

Even if you're not that hungry, these healthy breakfast food choices are light and a great way to begin your day without stuffing yourself.
