Shedding a Few Pounds can Impact Your Health
By Virginia Laird
In this fast-paced society it is easy to find a few unwanted pounds hanging out around the waist. This is due, in part, to fast food becoming a necessary evil; it's quick food, but it's not the healthiest food. Another reason many experience weight gain includes the decision to skip out on exercise because there is too much to do and far too little time to get it all accomplished. For these reasons, obesity has increasingly become a problem across the United States. There are many health problems that can be brought on due to extra weight. Most are not aware that dropping a few pounds can help combat some of the problems that can plague a person’s wellness. Small weight loss can be beneficial for diabetes and sleep.
Weight Loss Can Help Control Diabetes
With diabetes on the rise among the young, it leaves many questioning what the cause of this can be. The truth comes down to what is in the diet. The saying, “you are what you eat” is very true. As parents tend to cook fewer meals at home, opting for the more convenient fast foods, children are being exposed to more fried foods and foods saturated in sodium and fat. These all help to pack on weight at an early age. Research shows that losing as little as 15 pounds can help control blood sugar. Stabilizing blood sugar is the first step in controlling or even ridding your life of diabetes.
Sleep is a Necessary Part of Life
As pounds begin to add up, you may notice a change in your ability to sleep. Weight can affect the ability to get a good night of sleep. Sleep issues can begin to arise as people put on weight including sleep apnea. Some studies have shown that, as weight is lost, the issue with sleep apnea decreases.
If you are struggling with either of these issues and think weight loss could help you, begin by finding a plan that can work. A few things to keep in mind that could help you be successful include:
- Diet with a friend for support
- Add a light walk in the evening
- Begin by changing one meal per week to something healthier
- Educate yourself on the choices available
Knowledge is power! The next best thing is a network of people who will support, encourage, and help you along your path. Remember: You can do it! Anything is possible!
