Why Should You Give More Importance to Self Care?

How many times have you bought an expensive gift for a loved one that you wouldn't buy for yourself? How many times have you patted someone else on the back for the bare minimum achievement but looked down upon your own? How many times have you forgiven someone else for an outburst while you stayed in guilt over yours? We do this over and over again when we set inhumane standards for ourselves. To let go of these unrealistic standards and treat yourself with forgiveness and compassion is self-care.
Why Do We Need Self-Care?
In the 21st century, we should be talking about self-care more than ever. The newly found millennial doctrine of being too tough on yourself to achieve success comes as a byproduct of rapid development in tech, fashion, class conflict, and much more. In a fast-paced world that has a new model of all things popular every year, mankind has lost it in the rat race. A world where you have to conform has individuals biting each other's head off at the first chance they get. Every day, we consume a lot of content that emphasizes productivity, success stories of billionaires, money-making habits, start-up plans, and much more. When we allow such narratives to set the parameters of success for ourselves, we refuse to stop at the ordinary and keep striving until we have no time for ourselves.
How Can You Take Care of Yourself?
Self-care can be as simple as getting 8 hours of sleep and eating healthy food. However, It is also about taking some time out of your day to watch a show you like, cutting out on toxicity whether it comes from your own habits or people around you, and having a healthy work-life balance.
Self-care is not your overzealous New Year resolution. It refers to your life-long habits and principles that are nerve-wracking at times, but you carry them along anyway. Self-care will have you giving up on a lot of cash that you can make out of overtime and multiple jobs, toxic friendships and relationships that you are overly attached with, and lots of mouth-watering but unhealthy food.
While you can feel good because of your compassion and empathy, there should be things beyond giving to others that should make you feel better. It could be a nice walk in the park or stargazing at night. It could be rekindling old friendships and connecting with new people, taking a trip to your childhood dream destination, pursuing a lifelong passion, saving up for your next big tourist adventure or a degree, and so on.
