Lifetime Sports May Protect Health

By Tom Herrin

Some of us work really hard to try to keep ourselves in shape.  It can seem to be a real beating as we go through some pretty methodical practices.  Exercises can be that way, but there may be some better options.  While we are fully aware that we have to increase our heart rate, it may seem as if we are laboring with every step.  One of the best things to do is find something that keeps us a little more motivated.  Several years ago, many states included lifetime sports in their physical education curriculum to introduce some good options to students.  If we will look into some of them, we may find a much easier way to get in shape.

Look at Your Limits

Before deciding on some kind of activity to include in your regular routine, it may be a good idea to determine which kinds of activities could put you over your limit.  Recognizing the condition of your body is important.  Do a self-evaluation of your body.  What things cause you pain?  Do some things aggravate old injuries?  How do you respond with activities that challenge your respiratory system?  Once you look at all of these things, you should be ready to begin a search.

Walk If You Must, Run If You Can

The important thing is to find something that works for you.  Whether you need to pace yourself to a slow but steady walk or get into some heavy running, there is probably something that fits you.  It is usually suggested that you should strive to achieve a moderate level of activity on a regular basis.  Most recommend 30 minutes of moderate activity at least five days per week.  It is always a good idea to take at least one day off, so to speak, so that you can maintain a little variety in your routine.

There Are All Kinds of Options

Once you decide to make a commitment to become more active with lifetime sports, the field is wide open.  Some people prefer something slower such as golf or bowling.  Others enjoy competition without contact such as tennis.  For those who want something more aggressive, there are plenty of softball, soccer, and basketball leagues, to name a few.  Whatever you choose, enjoy it.  Motivation will drive you to increase participation.  The more you do, the better your health may become.
