Put an End to Laziness

By Paul Rothbart

It happens to the best of us. Those periods of lethargy when motivation seems to be lacking and we just can't seem to get into gear and accomplish anything. It can affect home projects, hobbies, or sometimes even work. It's not a good feeling and it can turn into a cycle that may last a fair amount of time. We call ourselves lazy and it negatively impacts self-esteem and can make it even harder to break out of. How can one break out of such a cycle? Here are some ways to end laziness and get back to a more productive self.

Realize You Are Not Alone

The first key step to ending laziness is to realize you are not the only person who experiences it. Wrapped into the bad feelings is the sense that other people are accomplishing goals and there must be something wrong with you. The fact is, bouts of laziness are extremely common. A poll found that 80 percent of people who set New Year's resolutions do not reach their goal. It is important to realize that experiencing a state of lethargy makes you human. There are many obstacles that are not easy to overcome. Stop beating yourself up and move forward.

Set Realistic Goals

It is good to aim high, but some goals are quite lofty and we may misjudge the amount of time and effort it will take to achieve them. Not having a true sense of what a particular goal will require can make it feel overwhelming and discourage us to the point that we quit. This can feel like laziness but it's just a matter of taking on too much. Think through goals carefully. Research if necessary and figure out exactly how much time and how many resources will be necessary. Big goals can be broken into smaller ones so you feel that you are making progress. Step by step, you approach the big goal. Make your goals worthwhile but don't place them out of reach.

Develop a Plan

Once you have chosen a challenging, yet attainable goal, make a plan. What will you need to do to achieve this goal? Create steps and a timeline. Decide what resources you will need and what time you have available to work toward the goal. It's also important to figure out if you will need help and who can provide that help. You don't have to do everything alone. Making a checklist and keeping track of progress is also very helpful. Seeing the progress written down makes it tangible and is very motivating.

It's not always easy to stay motivated and active in working toward our goals. It can make us feel lazy which also contributes to not progressing. But by keeping these tips in mind, you can overcome your lethargy and make small strides each day toward achieving your goals.
