Stay Healthy This Summer With These Tips
By Rachel Carver
Summer gives us more time outdoors and fun times with family and friends. Summer can be the perfect time to work on our overall health and wellness
However, summer also tempts us with high-calorie foods at barbeques and seasonal alcoholic cocktails. In the thick of things, it can be easy to lose track of our health priorities.
Stay on track while enjoying your summer with these tips.
Skip Hot Dogs
Hot dogs are common at barbeques. However, they contain high amounts of saturated fat and sodium. Hot dogs are cured meat, which has been linked to certain cancers.
Go for the burger whenever possible. Make burgers even healthier with lean ground beef, turkey, or salmon. Use condiments such as ketchup and mayo sparingly, as they are high in added fat and sugar.
Be Selective With Alcohol
Alcoholic beverages contain different amounts of calories. For example, a glass of red wine gives you about 120 calories. While summary fruity drinks are tasty, they usually contain much more sugar -- and alcohol -- than your glass of wine. This adds up, making weight loss harder.
Go for lower-calorie options such as vodka and soda water. Drink water between alcoholic drinks to stay hydrated.
Make Your Own Smoothies
A smoothie tastes great on a hot day. These drinks often contain seasonal fruits and veggies.
However, buying a smoothie for convenience will often give you high amounts of added sugar from syrups, honey, or other sweeteners. With a blender and your favorite fresh ingredients, you can make a satisfying smoothie at home that will not sabotage your weight loss goals.
Fuel Your Body Properly
You don't want to skip breakfast and then try to burn calories on an outdoor run. Your planned physical activity should determine how much fuel your body needs.
If you increase your workouts, you need to adjust your macros accordingly. Make sure you get enough fat, carbs, and protein.
Avoid Restrictive Diets
It is tempting to eliminate food groups and drastically reduce your calorie intake to get ready for the beach. However, this can lead to binge eating and weight gain once you stop these restrictive activities.
Focus on portion control and moderation. Choose a small ice cream cone instead of the large one. Portion out your snacks and meals to avoid over eating. Stay active to burn more calories, improve your mood, and combat a life of too much sitting. Implement healthy, sustainable habits that will help you achieve your weight loss goal and keep you healthy.
