Chiropractic Adjustments: Your Questions Answered!

By Sara Butler

The chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic answer a lot of questions; obviously, some of the most common questions are about chiropractic adjustments. An adjustment can be a concern if you’ve never had one before or you’re seeing a new chiropractor for the first time. For every question you have, there’s an answer! Here are some of the most common question about chiropractic and the answers to help put your mind at ease!

What is a Chiropractic Adjustment?

The American Chiropractic Association defines an adjustment as a manipulation of the joints of the body, especially the spine, to restore joint function. When the chiropractors at The Joint perform a hands-on adjustment, they’re using special techniques to shift a specific joint in one direction. They pinpoint the joints of your spine that may have dysfunction or restriction and seek to eliminate it so the joint can function normally.

What’s that Sound?

Sometimes when a chiropractor performs an adjustment to the joints of the spine, a cracking or popping sound is heard. This is a very common thing and nothing that should cause you concern. It’s caused by the release of a bubble in the fluid that surrounds your joints. In fact, there’s no difference between the sound your body may make during a chiropractic adjustment and the sound you hear when popping your own knuckles.

Is It Safe?

Almost everyone has found their back or neck stiff at some point and maybe have even gone so far as to try to “crack” the joints in the spine themselves. The cracking or popping you may have experienced because of this is simply the release of joint pressure, but it’s different than the adjustment a chiropractor performs. That’s because a chiropractor is specially trained to help restore healthy motion and decrease pain in joints that aren’t moving as they should. It’s a safe and effective treatment. When you pop your own neck or back, you’re simply stretching out ligaments and making the joints in your spine less stable!

If it’s been a while since you’ve seen a chiropractor or it’s your first time, rest assured that the chiropractors at The Joint can answer any questions you have.
