Why Slow Weight Loss is the Best Approach

By Genevieve Cunningham

Losing weight is so frustrating. Besides the fact that we have to skip the dessert and exercise a little more, losing weight always takes longer than we want it to. Why? Because we want it now! But even though faster weight loss is more satisfying, it’s definitely not healthier. Before you jump into your weight loss program, take a look at why slow weight loss is the best way to go.

It’s More Easily Sustained

If you really want weight loss to last, the slow approach is definitely the best one. If you drastically cut your calories, you’ll be depriving yourself on a regular basis. And this is incredibly hard to sustain over a long period of time. To lose weight and keep it off, cut out just a few things from your diet and let the weight come off slowly. This will have a much higher likelihood of becoming a lifestyle rather than a quick fix.

It Gives Your Skin Time to Adjust

If you have a significant amount of weight to lose, you probably also have a bit of extra skin. If you attempt to lose the weight very quickly, your skin may not have time to adjust. This means that you’ll be left with sagging skin even when the weight is gone. If you lose the weight slowly, it gives your skin more time to adapt and tighten up again. Though major weight loss may still come with its fair share of loose skin, it will be far less with the slower approach.

It Reduces the Risk of the Gain Back

It’s incredibly frustrating to lose weight only to gain it back. The faster you lose weight, the more likely this is to happen. Severe restriction often leads to eventual binges. And binges often lead to a quick and irritating weight gain. To avoid the binges, don’t restrict yourself so severely. Slow and steady cutbacks make it far more likely that you can stick with it and avoid that up and down ballooning phenomenon.

You might feel like you have to lose it all right now, but you don’t. You didn’t gain the weight in one day, and you won’t lose it in a day either. Be slow and methodical about your weight loss plan. The slower you lose, the better you’ll feel, and the longer your results will last.
