Getting Fit? 3 Tips for Sticking With It!
By Genevieve Cunningham
Getting in shape and improving your health is a tough task. Even if we know what to do -- eat right and exercise -- getting it done is another story. There always seems to be an excuse. We don’t have enough time. We don’t have enough money. We don’t have the energy. While these excuses are sometimes true, the real truth is that we just don’t have a strong enough desire. And maybe that’s because we take a difficult task and make it even more difficult. If you’re ready to finally stick with your healthy living plan, take a look at these ways to make it a little easier.
Take It Slowly
Don’t forget that getting fit is not a race. Unless you’re doing it for a certain event, there’s not a finish line. And even if you are trying to meet a certain deadline, that moment won’t be the end of your healthy living. What you’re trying to do is create a lifestyle, and lifestyles are best created at a slow and steady pace. If you’re moving too quickly and burning out, don’t be afraid to slow it down and take it one day at a time.
Make Small Goals
Sometimes we’re guilty of making goals that are just too big. It’s hard to think really far into the future. If our goal is to lose 100 pounds, we might give up long before we meet that goal. Why? Because it takes a long time to get there! And we need to be successful long before that. Instead of one big lofty goal, make some small attainable goals that you can meet along the way. This gives you that feeling of accomplishment and helps you stay committed to your ultimate goal.
Find Your Motivation
Everyone has a different motivation. For some, it’s purely intrinsic, a drive that comes from within. For others, it might be a bit more extrinsic. Maybe it’s an event -- a reunion or anniversary. Or maybe it’s fitting into a certain pair of pants. Or maybe it’s lowering your blood pressure or minimizing diabetes medication. Your motivation could be a million things, but getting fit will only work if you understand what your motivation is. Find yours, and use it to keep you moving forward.
Anyone can get fit. It might be harder for some than others, but anyone can make it happen. Use these tips to help you get started and stay motivated. With some hard work, plenty of patience, and perseverance, you’ll be moving toward better health and a fit body before you know it.
