When Mother Knows Best: Tips With Impact

By Genevieve Cunningham

Growing up, you probably heard all kinds of advice from your mother. When you were a child, you mostly listened. As a teenager, you completely ignored her. And now as an adult, you're probably seeking out her advice more often than you'd like to admit. The truth is that, in many cases, mother really does know best. But how do you know which advice to take to heart and which to forget? When it comes to health, take a look at these tips from your mother that should become a part of your life now.

Wash Your Hands

Your mom was totally right. You probably don't wash your hands enough. Washing your hands helps to eliminate germs on a regular basis. This might seem like a no-brainer, but most people skip the hand washing in critical moments. If you want to stay healthy, you have to stop, take your time, and keep those hands clean.

Get More Sleep

Your mother gave you a bedtime for a reason. It's because it was good for you! Sleep is a crucial part of living a healthy life. And it keeps us happier, too. If you're not getting enough sleep, go back and take your mom's advice. Set yourself a bedtime and actually stick with it. It won't be long until your sleep improves and you'll wonder why you ever thought you didn't need it.

The Early Bird Gets the Worm

In the same way it's good to go to bed on time, it's also good to wake up early. Research suggests over and over again that morning people are more productive throughout the day and suffer from fewer bouts of depression and anxiety. If you like the thought of these benefits in your life, it's time to set your alarm clock and stop with the snooze.

Say No

You don't actually have to do more. It's OK and even healthy to say no. Your mother didn't want you to be too busy growing up, and she was right. If you don't have time, don't take on another responsibility. Don't say yes out of obligation. Say no and be proud of it.

Moms are too full of life and experience to ignore. In these cases, it's perfectly OK (and probably the best idea!) to listen to their advice. Follow sound advice no matter where it comes from, and you'll be leading a healthier life for the rest of your life.
