Tips for Taking Care of Your Teeth

By Genevieve Cunningham

There’s nothing like a pearly white smile to make you feel attractive and confident. A lot of emphasis is placed on the teeth. We want our teeth to be straight … so we spend thousands on braces. We want our teeth to be white … so we spend hundreds on whitening products. While we focus a lot on the appearance of our teeth, it’s also important to focus specifically on the health of our teeth. If we do this, the appearance will follow. While most of us think that we know all there is to know about tooth care, many of us are getting it wrong every day. Take a look at these tips for maintaining the health of your teeth and developing a smile you can be proud of.

Brush More Often

Even though we know we’re supposed to brush, too many people skip this step far too often. Is that one time that you accidentally fell asleep before brushing going to kill your teeth? Nope. But how many times does that actually happen? Dentists recommend a minimum of two brushes a day, but more if necessary. If you want to improve the health of your teeth, this is the first and most important place to start.

Watch Your Diet

There are foods that are better for your teeth than others. Anything with calcium, such as milk or cheese, helps to build strength in your teeth. You can also stay away from highly acidic foods such as coffee and lemons. These tend to break down the enamel over time. And coffee brings a double whammy, as the dark color in coffee and other beverages such as red wine tend to stain teeth. Instead, go for fresh fruits and veggies when possible, follow it up with water, and of course, brush quickly after every meal.

Go to the Dentist

It probably seems obvious, but most people actually skip this step. The dentist can help look for damage, correct problems before they get out of control, and give you tips for protecting your teeth for a lifetime. Get your regular cleanings, get checked for cavities, and take the advice given in order to have healthier teeth than ever before.

While there are many important aspects of our health to focus on, our smile is definitely one of them. Having clean and healthy teeth not only improves our physical health, but it also significantly boosts self esteem and mental health, as well. Use these tips to protect your teeth and get that pearly white smile you’ve been hoping for.
