Routines That Keep the Skin Fresh and Clear

By Genevieve Cunningham

The skin is one of our first and biggest outwardly expressions of who we are. When people see us, we want them to see who we are, not acne or wrinkles or frustrating age spots. Yet far too many of us give little in the way of attention to this precious part of our bodies. And in a place like Miami, where the sun is always out and the elements are in full force, it’s important to protect the skin early and stick with the routine every day. The good news? It’s never too late to get started! If you’re ready to take skin care seriously, take a look at these tips for improving and protecting the skin for a lifetime.

Exfoliate a Few Times a Week

Exfoliation is important. It clears away dead skin cells and trapped dirt, and encourages skin cells to renew themselves. But doing it too much or it can actually irritate the skin. So what’s the happy medium? Generally try to exfoliate with a good product (one that works for you!) about three times a week. If it’s not enough, kick it up to four, and if it’s too much, knock it back to two. How is exfoliation done? Just dampen the skin, apply a small amount of product, and use a towel or loofah to make small circles all around the skin, and then rinse.

Drink More Water Than Anything Else

We all love sodas and flavored teas and fruit juices. These drinks are delicious, and they definitely satisfy the tastebuds. Unfortunately, they may not be satisfying the skin. When it comes to keeping the skin fresh and clear, nothing beats water. Water flushes out toxins and debris from the body, and as a result, many people find glowing skin. If improving the state of the face (or skin anywhere) is the goal, just stick to water as much as possible.

Moisturize … and Then Moisturize Again

Most of us learn this far too late. Moisturizer is what keeps the skin soft and supple. When we're young, we don’t really understand how much moisture the skin needs in order to ward off wrinkles and age spots and that weathered look. And by the time most of us realize its importance, the damage has been done. Luckily it doesn’t matter if a little damage has been done, applying moisturizer religiously now can still prevent further premature aging. And in some cases, it can even improve the current state of the skin. Just find a moisturizer that is enjoyable and feels good, preferably one with sunscreen, and apply it multiple times per day to areas of the skin that are constantly exposed to the natural elements.

Protecting the skin means protecting that first impression, long-term confidence, and the overall perception of yourself and the world. If you haven’t taken skincare seriously yet, use these tips to get started. With some care and attention, you can improve and love the skin you’re in for years to come.
