Why Insomnia is Picking Up and How to Beat It
By Genevieve Cunningham
Insomnia might be one of the absolute worst ailments to plague anyone. You want to sleep; you desperately want to sleep. But that sleep just won't happen no matter what you do. It's incredibly frustrating. But perhaps the most frustrating part of all is that insomnia is so hard to treat. In many cases, you just have to do what you can and hope for the best. To try to eliminate insomnia from your life, take a look at these reasons it's getting worse, followed by some tips for making it better.
Why It’s Getting Worse
There could be a number of reasons as to why your insomnia is getting worse. A few of the most common reasons include:
-
Stress - Everyone has to deal with stress. But when stress levels are too high, it might get in the way of sleep.
-
Technology - Oh how we love our technology. Unfortunately, staying on a device all day and half the night may be contributing to our lack of sleep.
-
Poor habits - It's entirely possible that your own poor habits are ruining your sleep. Poor eating, lack of exercise, and erratic bedtimes can all promote insomnia.
How to Beat It
We would love it if there were a one-size-fits-all approach to beating insomnia, but unfortunately it doesn't work that way. A few tips that may help you sleep include:
-
Stress reducing routines - You’ll never get rid of stress if you don't learn some management techniques. Deep breathing, running, and meditation may all help calm your nerves and relax into sleep.
-
Better habits - Improving your habits can improve all aspects of your life including sleep. Exercise regularly, eat well, and set a bedtime. The better your habits, the more likely it is that you’ll find sleep.
-
External stimuli - Sometimes you just need a little help. Try things such as hot tea, deep stretching, warm blankets, or even medication if necessary.
Far too many people suffer from insomnia. It's a condition that truly plagues us as adults, and it puts a serious damper on our health. We suffer mentally, physically, and emotionally when we can't sleep. And of course, we feel rotten as well. Use these tips to try to manage the lack of sleep and the fatigue that comes with it, and you may find better health to boot.
