3 Ways to Build Strength Without Lifting Weights
By Genevieve Cunningham
Being strong feels good. When we're strong, we feel more capable. Confident. A strong body is more stable, and it's certainly something to be proud of. But how do we create strength? Your first thought might be to hit the weight room, and that's definitely a good choice. But if you don't have a weight room (or perhaps the confidence) readily available, you have other options. If you want to build a strong body, but you're not quite ready for weights, take a look at these three other methods to try today.
Calisthenics
When we first start working out, we often use this method. Why? Because it works. Using your own body weight to build strength is incredibly effective. It forces your body to lift more than 100 pounds -- or whatever your current weight. Try adding in some squats and lunges and push-ups. Start with just a few reps and work your way up to more. You won't build massive bulky muscles with this approach, but you'll definitely create solid strength from head to toe.
Resistance
Resistance is key to building strength. Luckily, there are multiple ways to create resistance in your workout. If you want something accessible and extremely adaptable, try resistance bands, which come in multiple weights. If you need something gentle, try getting in the water for a natural, softer resistance. If you need something free, try using a towel in place of bands or canned goods in place of weights. There's always a way to move forward in your fitness, so be creative and don't give up.
General Activity
A strong body is an active body. You can't sit all day on your phone or in front of Netflix and expect to be strong. Get up and get moving. Go for walks. Hike. Ride your bicycle. The more you use your muscles, the stronger you'll be. Make activity a goal, and your body will inevitably grow stronger.
Everyone can get stronger. And for the vast majority, we actually need to get stronger! But you don't actually have to use a weight room to do it. And for many, that's a serious game changer. Use these tips to build strength without touching weights, and build a body to carry you forward with strength, stability, and good health.
