Is Motivation Key to Getting Fit?

When it comes to getting fit and healthy, finding motivation is one of the hardest things to do. It's hard to see past the sore muscles, fatigue, and extra time. We want to be healthy -- but do we want it bad enough? Luckily, relying on motivation may not be the best approach after all. In fact, it may be incredibly overrated. If you're interested in getting fit and living your best life, take a look at what you really need to get over the hump and moving toward your best health yet. 

Motivation Helps

Before you think that motivation is totally unnecessary, it's important to note that it definitely helps. Motivation is often helpful in getting us started. In giving us that kick-start we need to join the gym, take the class, or change our diet. Motivation can come in all forms. It might be an upcoming event, a piece of clothing, or a personal health situation. It doesn't matter what motivates you as long as it gets your rear in gear. If you find something that makes you feel motivated, grab it, use it, and then find other ways to keep yourself going. 

Discipline is Key

So if it's not motivation that helps us reach our goals, what is it? It's discipline! While motivation might get us started, it's self-discipline that keeps us moving toward our goals. When the motivation fades -- and it definitely will -- you'll need discipline to keep you working hard. Discipline is what makes you work out even when you don't want to. Discipline is what helps you skip the fast food in favor of eating at home. If you want to develop a trait that will work toward better health, focus on self-discipline. As your discipline improves, so too will your health, general wellness, and overall quality of life.

When we think about getting fit and healthy, motivation is always a part of the thought process. And since motivation is so hard to find, that might be a bit discouraging to many. Luckily, motivation is only part of the equation. Instead of worrying about keeping motivation alive, strive for solid self-discipline. With good practice and the discipline to keep going, you'll feel better than ever and be in the best shape of your life in no time at all.
