The Health Benefits of Working Upright

By Sara Butler

Sitting at a desk all day can really take its toll on your back. In fact, sitting for long periods of time has been found to be incredibly unhealthy for you, leading to a host of health problems down the road. To combat this, many companies are investing in standing desks for their employees, but do they work? Here are some of the benefits of working in an upright position all day instead of sitting.

It Aids Healthy Postural Transitions

Postural transitions are made when you move your body from one position to another. When you’re sitting in a chair, it makes it less likely you will move around often and change position. Chiropractors recommend that people make postural transitions several times an hour. They also recommend that people avoid staying in just one position for too long such as sitting, standing, or leaning. If you can move around every 20 minutes or so, you’ll feel a lot better and be a lot healthier.

Staying in one position for too long has been linked to chronic disease such as:

  • Heart disease
  • Obesity
  • Diabetes

Your Spine Health Can Improve

Your spine is an important element of your health. A healthy spine improves your overall health, so why not use a standing desk and improve your spinal health?

The postural transitions facilitated by a standing desk can help your spine to stay flexible and its range of motion to remain normal. If you spend too long sitting each day, it can lead to spinal issues such as decreased mobility, loss of flexibility, and pain. So, take care of your vertebrae by moving around, and you do that more with a standing desk.

It Engages Your Core Muscles

Another important component to overall health and spinal health is a strong core. Your abdominal muscles help to support your spine and take the pressure off your lower back when they’re strong and engaged. Sitting for long periods can weaken these muscles since they’re not engaged. When you have a strong core you may notice that your balance, posture, mobility, and flexibility improve.

There are many health benefits to working upright all day long. It’s been shown to improve circulation, decrease the risk of chronic disease, and even improve your brain function. If you have questions about standing desks, discuss them with the chiropractors at The Joint!
