3 Tips for Chiropractic Aftercare
By Sara Butler
There are things you own that you expect to last for a while such as your laptop, your house, or your car. But what about your body? You take your car to the mechanic when it’s making a strange sound, you call a plumber when your house has a leak – and you should take your body to the chiropractor when you know something just isn’t working as it should. Regular adjustments at the chiropractor are an investment in the future but what about after you’ve gone to the chiropractor? You have to practice self-care in an effort to ensure you’re getting a return on your investment! Here are a few tips to help you take care of your body after your chiropractic adjustment in order to promote healing in the long term.
Hydrate
Your body is mostly made up of water and it relies on water to help cushion joints and flush away waste products produced. Water also helps to carry important nutrients to every single cell in your body. When you have an adjustment at the chiropractor, your muscles and joints are being retrained. If you’re not hydrated enough then your joints can’t shift and heal as they need to.
Exercise
Your chiropractor may recommend some exercises or stretching during your adjustment. If they do, it’s important to follow their advice. They give you these exercises in order to help improve your condition, so make a commitment to do them.
Avoid Injury
This one probably goes without saying but it can be challenging to change your ways after an adjustment. If there was something you did to cause injury you needed a chiropractor for, it’s probably best to avoid that activity. If it was due to exercise or you’re dealing with chronic neck and back pain, then it’s probably a good idea to follow the modifications to the activity recommended by the chiropractor.
Rest
Daily activities place stress on the body. That’s why it’s important to make sure you’re getting adequate rest so that your body can deal. After a chiropractic adjustment, you should give your body time to slow down and recuperate, so avoid any home improvement projects or marathon training for a couple of days. Try not to do any heavy lifting that day either, especially if you’re recovering from an injury.
