Is It Time for New Workout Shoes?

By Sara Butler

A good pair of workout shoes is a must-have item. After all, your feet are the foundation of every move you make, so avoiding injury and getting the most from your workout means having shoes that help you accomplish your goals instead of hindering them. Here are a few of the signs you should be on the lookout for to know if it’s time for a new pair of workout shoes.

A Lot of Mileage

You probably log a lot of miles walking, jogging, or running in your workout shoes. A good pair of shoes can only be expected to go 300 miles or so before it’s time to replace. If you like to get outdoors and hit the hiking trails or exercise on a rough surface, then you may need new shoes before you hit the max mileage.

It’s always a good idea to write the date you bought your shoes on the inside of them, so you can roughly estimate how many miles you’ve gone.

It’s a Pain

If you are suffering from shin splints, muscle fatigue or joint pain of some kind -- especially in the knees -- then it’s probably time for a new pair of workout shoes. That’s a big sign that they’re not offering you enough cushion and shock absorption.

They Fail the Twist Test

Hold one of your workout shoes out in front of you, holding at either end, then twist. It should feel firm. If there’s not enough support in the shoe, then it will twist easily. Replace it as soon as possible if that happens to you!

Tread Lightly

One of the biggest signs that you need a new pair of workout shoes is the treads. If the soles look worn out and the treads are bare, then you need a new pair of shoes. The soles are the last thing to go, so if they’re in bad shape then it’s guaranteed the shock absorbency and cushioning functions of your shoes are long gone too.

New Shoes Feel Better

Some experts recommend having two pairs of workout shoes you rotate between in order to spread out wear a bit. If you get a new pair of shoes to throw into the mix and they feel a whole lot better on than your current workout shoes, then that’s a huge sign that it’s time to let the old shoes go!

Your exercise shoes are important to your health, so pay attention so you know when to replace them!
