Back Pain Prevention for New Moms

By Sara Butler

Being a new mother is exciting. You’ve just created and brought forth a whole new human! There’s no job as important as being a mother to your child, which is why you need to keep your health and wellness in mind -- especially your spinal health. Having a baby, both during birth and after, is a harrowing experience for your body. There are special things you must keep under consideration as you’re recovering from childbirth and embarking on the voyage of motherhood. Here’s what the chiropractors at The Joint want you to make a mental note of!

The Problem

Being pregnant causes a shift in your center of gravity that doesn’t automatically go back to normal right after you give birth. That, combined with the demands of caring for a tiny human, also puts a lot of stress and strain on your back. You’re constantly bending over to pick up and constantly carrying your new baby and that can lead to back problems and pain.

How to Prevent Back Pain

Working with a chiropractor at The Joint is one way to ensure that you don’t let your spinal health get away from you. They can make sure you’re free of any joint dysfunctions or restrictions that can cause problems and they can also make sure that things are settling back into place as they should with your tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints.

You should also begin an exercise program once you’re cleared by your doctor. It doesn’t have to be anything drastic -- you don’t need to train for a marathon. But you should increase your activity level and rebuild strength and fitness once it’s safe to.

Focus on your hip and back flexibility with some stretching and yoga. It’s also important to restore strength to your core muscles after pregnancy -- but not too soon! Once you get the go-ahead, the yoga you’re doing or a Pilates class can be a gentle way to work on it. Remember, the chiropractors at The Joint see many young mothers with back pain, but you don’t have to be one of them!

A Few More Tips

When dealing with your little one, it’s also important to remember to:

  • Pick them up correctly – Keep them close to your body and lift with your legs, never your back
  • Feed them with correct posture – Those late night and early morning feedings can be killer, but it's important to remember to sit upright in a chair and avoid bending over your baby; support them with pillows if you must to help keep your posture correct

If you have questions about how to care for your back as you care for your new baby, ask the chiropractors at The Joint!
