Do You Know These Sciatica Symptoms?

By Sara Butler

If you suffer from lower back pain, then it's a good idea to know a little bit about sciatica. Your sciatic nerve runs from your lower back to the toes in each leg. It's the largest nerve in the body and when it's irritated, it doesn't hesitate to let you know. But some people may not be familiar with the signs of sciatic nerve issues. Here are a few signs and symptoms that you should be on the lookout for so you can let the chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic help.

Pain in the Leg

Sciatic nerve pain can be caused by pressure on, inflammation of, or damage to the sciatic nerve. If you're experiencing pain across your buttocks, in your feet, and down the back of your thigh and calf, then it might be caused by your sciatic nerve.

A Specific Type of Pain

The nerves in your body are like electrical circuits. Many people complain of pain that feels like an electric shock or like a burning sensation when they're experiencing issues with sciatica. The pain can be intense, making it difficult to walk or even stand up straight. How intense the pain is may depend on how much damage the nerve has sustained or how much pressure is being placed upon it.

Pain on Just One Side

Sciatica most often strikes only one side of the body depending on where the nerve is injured. It's not unheard of for the pain to be present on both sides of the body, but most often it occurs on only one side. So if you're experiencing pain down one side of the leg or across one side of your buttocks, then it might be an issue with your sciatic nerve that is the root cause.

Sneezing (or Coughing or Laughing) Makes It Worse

If you're experiencing pain down your leg and it gets worse when you do something that increases pressure, then it might be an issue with your sciatic nerve. Some people experience an exacerbation of the pain with very small movements such as laughing, coughing, or sneezing.

You Sit on Your Wallet

Many people carry a wallet in their back pocket and fail to remove it when they sit. This can cause something called piriformis syndrome, a condition in which the piriformis muscle in the buttocks is pinched and compresses the sciatic nerve. If you sit on your wallet and are experiencing leg pain, then your wallet may be to blame!

Don't ignore leg pain. Instead, talk to the chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic today for help.
