Chiropractic Tips to Protect Your Back
By Sara Butler
Every day, you should be thinking about how to protect your back in everyday situations. With back pain such a common affliction in people, you can reduce your risk of injury by adhering to a few simple tips each day to protect your back. Here are a few chiropractic tips from the chiropractors at The Joint to help you care for your back.
Watch Your Posture
It's important to focus on posture as you move throughout your day -- even when you're sleeping at night! Posture helps to keep your back strong as you go throughout your day. Make sure to have a chair at work that supports your lower back and supports your arms. Your feet should be flat on the floor and your shoulders back. Any screens should be at eye level or just below. Simply make sure that you are not looking down since that puts pressure on your upper back and shoulders. When you sleep, make sure to have a good pillow that keeps your neck in alignment with the rest of your body.
Stretch Often
Stretching regularly can help to combat back injury and pain. It works by relieving the tension and stress that can come from holding one position for too long. Make sure you make time to stretch periodically, as often as once each hour when you're at work. Set a timer on your phone to help you remember.
Watch How You Lift
Occasionally, you need to move heavy objects. Of course, in times such as those, you should ask for help when something is really heavy and also use precautions, such as using your legs to lift and never your back. But it's everyday activities that involve lifting and bending that need to be thought about too.
For example, if you have a small child, you need to practice healthy lifting techniques when picking them up. The same goes for working out in your garden or cleaning things. Do not bend at the back or twist, hold items close to your body, and use your core muscles to help keep your back supported as you walk.
Caring for your back is something you must think about each day. If you have questions about other ways in which you can make sure your back stays healthy, then talk to the chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic for some more tips.
