Preventing the Flu When You Work With Others

By Brandi Goodman

Working in close proximity with other people can lead to the spreading of illness. It's easy to pass on the flu when you have co-workers who are nearby at all times. With some tips in mind, you can do your part to help prevent the flu and the spreading of germs. It isn't always completely avoidable, but you can do something to help limit exposure.

Avoid Hand Contact

If you can help it, avoid hand contact. You don't need to shake hands with someone you see coughing all over the place. It's also wise to avoid touching anything you know lots of others touch. This might not always be avoidable, but you should at least wash your hands afterward if you do happen to touch something contaminated. Door knobs, printers, bathroom stall handles, sinks, and other public property should all be used with caution.

Wash Your Hands Often

Some people think washing their hands after going to the bathroom is enough. You should be washing your hands often to avoid as many germs as possible. Any time you touch a surface that's regularly touched by others, you should wash your hands. If you can't get to the sink often enough than at least keep some hand sanitizer with you to use in between times.

Get Your Yearly Flu Shot

Doctors recommend that you get a new flu shot each year. It won't prevent against every strain, but it can help you avoid some of the most common ones. Getting this shot is a simple preventive measure that may help you to avoid getting the flu or at least getting such severe symptoms.

Take a Sick Day

Stay home when you feel yourself coming down with something. You wouldn't want others at work to pass something onto you, so don't be the one to pass it on to them. You should take a sick day anytime you're feeling under the weather if you're able to. If you must go, then wear a mask and keep hand sanitizer with you to prevent passing germs to others.

It's hard to stay away from the flu and other illnesses when you work closely with others. Do what you can to prevent spreading germs, including staying at home if you're sick. You need to be as careful as possible so you do not bring the sickness from work to home or vice versa.
