Better Health With the Correct Sleep Position

By Donna Stark

Did you know that, on average, we spend about a third of our lives in bed? And while that may sound like an awful lot, it's exactly what our bodies need. We need quality sleep to rest from the day we just had and to be ready for the next day ahead. It's a time of healing, and there is nothing that can duplicate the benefits that come from it. However, it's also a time that may be doing more harm than good too, especially if you don't focus on good sleeping posture. Why is that? Well, keep reading to find out more.

Better Health With the Correct Sleep Position

A healthy spine is a key factor in your optimal well-being, so it makes sense that if you are spending a third of your life sleeping in harmful positions, problems could arise. Poor sleeping positions can lead to back and neck pain, headaches and migraines, accidents and injuries, and illness and disease. You definitely want to make sure you are getting the rest you need but how do you know what position to choose? Let's take a look at the three most common.

  • Stomach sleeping - If you like to crawl under your blankets at night and sleep on your stomach you may want to reconsider doing that. Stomach sleeping is arguably the worst sleeping position you can choose and is rarely recommended by experts. The pressure and stress it places on both your neck and lower back can lead to serious pain issues and joint stiffness down the road.
  • Side sleeping - Although generally considered better than stomach sleeping, side sleeping can cause its fair share of problems, too. And that's because it can lead to pain in the shoulders, hips, and back if your body isn't properly aligned throughout the night. A quality mattress and some strategic pillow placement can help though, so try placing a pillow between your knees and find one that aligns your neck with your spine.
  • Back sleeping - Sleeping on your back gives your body the best shot at pain-free days and quality sleep. While it places your spine in its most natural position, the best part about back sleeping is that your arms, shoulders, and legs won't be crushed under your body weight. And if you want additional support, place a pillow under your knees to support the natural curve of your spine.

Sleeping the Correct Way

It's time to start making up for those crucial hours of sleep you have been missing. When you go to bed tonight, take an extra minute or two to focus on the position you sleep in and make any necessary changes. It may feel uncomfortable at first and require some extra effort, but when you start noticing an improvement in how you feel every day, it will all be worth it!
