Rewriting Today's Script? Don't Forget Your Smile
By Sandy Schroeder
Often I start the day determined to make it good, but sometimes I forget one vital ingredient. My smile.
If you can relate, you know how easy it is to forget to smile when you are totally focused on results. There may be last-minute issues, more deadlines, and unexpected new stuff to do.
In the process, smiles often get lost but researchers tell us smiles release endorphins, those feel-great chemicals that ease pain and create a good mood.
Why You Should Be Smiling More
At first you may only be able to come up a half smile, but keep trying. Look what can happen.
Smiles reach out to everyone - Look around. Most of us gravitate to the person who is smiling. Make that magnet work for you everywhere you go.
Smiles upgrade your mood - Try starting the morning with a smile and watch for better results throughout the day.
Smiles turn away anger - When you run into someone who is mad, try a kind word and a small smile. They may surprise you and explain why they have been angry.
Smiles light up your face - When you want to look your very best, remember to smile.
Smiles erase stress - When I am feeling pressured I call a funny friend. Soon I am relaxed and laughing too.
Smiles help everyone else - Too often when we look around we see sad faces or grim frowns. Try smiling and say something positive. If you get a return smile you may have improved someone's day.
Smiles boost the immune system - Positive emotions play out through the body helping us stay healthier.
Smiles can give you a needed lift - When everything else has gone wrong, don't give up. Settle down with your favorite funny old movie or get together with close friends. Smiles are sure to follow.
Smiles are contagious - Whenever everything seems gloomy, keep smiling. I used to work with a fellow who could light up the room with his smile. He would arrive and soon everybody would be grinning.
Smiles may help lower blood pressure - Moods surge through the body and can play out in a higher blood pressure reading. If you are concerned about your blood pressure, see your doctor. At the same time, pause to relax and smile a little as you enjoy a better mood.
Smiles are good for kids too - Our kids copy what we do and they may smile more if we do too.
