Simple Ways to Relax and Let Go of Anxiety

By Sandy Schroeder

We live in a fast-paced society that generates tension and anxiety. If you find yourself running into a constant stream of tension, it may be time to find some simple ways to relax that really work. suggests using these techniques to relax the body and revive your focus and energy. In just a few minutes your mind and body can regroup and start over.

Slip into a rhythm - Dancing, swimming, walking, running or climbing will help you relax if you focus on the movements as you do them. Concentrate on each step. Let the rhythm erase the tension.

Picture a favorite place - Step outside or close the door. Sit down, close your eyes, and picture a place you love by the water, at the beach, or in your garden. Feel the breeze and remember the pleasure of being there as you relax and let go of your worries.

Breathe deeply - Wherever you are, you can use your breath to soothe your worries. Find a quiet spot and take five deep breaths, letting your belly move forward each time you inhale. Each time let go of some of the anxiety. Repeat these steps whenever you feel yourself tightening up.

Let yoga relax you - Both the mind and the body come into play with deep breathing and static poses. As you shed anxiety you may become stronger, more flexible and more coordinated. Regular practice will help you remain relaxed when stress strikes. Check with your doctor before beginning and begin with a professional trainer.

Move your muscles - Progressive muscle relaxation is a process that tightens and relaxes muscles letting you feel the difference. As you use the process you will learn to spot the first signs of muscle tightening and strain. Gradually you will learn how to respond relaxing the muscles.

Slip into a warm tub of water - When the day has simply been too much, a bath can relax the body and ease the stress. Muscle tension eases and circulation improves. A warm pool can work in much the same way to ease the body and soothe the mind.

Absorb music and sounds - Listen to your favorite music or the sound of the wind, waves or rain. Many people use the soothing sounds of fountains or waterfalls to drift off to sleep. Whenever you feel yourself winding up, let the sounds absorb the tension.

Whatever Works

Try one technique and then another. When you find one that works well, hang onto it and use it on a regular basis to ease your mind and smooth out your day.
