See If These Energy Drains Are Sabotaging Your Life

By Sandy Schroeder

It can be very frustrating to wake up to a full day and have no energy. Most of us have one busy day after another, and the last thing that we need is a loss of energy, but it happens.

Pinning down the problem and doing something about it can make a world of difference, according to Harvard Health.

See if these energy destroyers are working on you.

Chronic stress takes its toll - When one demand after another raises your anxiety level, the adrenal glands produce a hormone called cortisol that creates damaging inflammation in the body.  If you have ever found yourself in a no-win situation that you cannot seem to control, you know how this works. I turned to yoga to fight chronic stress in a job and it worked. A weekly class in yoga became my refuge, helping me rally and regain my perspective. Tai chi, breathing exercises, guided imagery or mindful meditation can do the same thing. As little as 10 minutes a day will help.

Slowing down sabotages energy - It is really a vicious circle. When you wake up tired, it's easy to skip that early morning walk or daily workout, but when you do, your muscles begin to shrink and lose power. Turn the situation around with gradual steps. Take a shorter walk, or do stretches during the day. In the evening walk on the treadmill or use a stationary bike. On the weekends walk instead of driving. Gradually your muscles will regain power and give you the energy you need.

Sleeplessness absorbs energy - When you are fighting anxiety as you deal with family demands or financial pressures, loss of sleep can boost cortisol production and trigger inflammation in the body. Medications or sleep apnea may contribute to the problem. Making your bedroom a sleep retreat, limiting caffeine, and shutting down electronics two hours before bedtime can help. Blackout drapes, comfortable pillows and mattresses and air filters to screen noise will also work to create a great sleep environment.

Junk food undermines energy - All of the vital energy of fresh whole fruits and vegetables, lean fish, chicken, nuts, seeds and whole grains get lost when we gravitate to fast foods, high sugar or salt snacks and overly processed foods. Make your farmers market a regular stop for your family's favorite fresh produce and trade in all of the chips, cookies, and frozen pizza for black bean or fish tacos, spinach omelets, homemade oatmeal cookies and banana loaves.

Bad drink choices zap energy - Too much caffeine or alcohol can ruin sleep and drain energy. Sweetened sodas or teas can trigger sugar highs that lead to energy crashes. Drink six to eight glasses of water a day and stick with green tea, cocoa and energy loaded smoothies.

As you sort through and fix energy zappers you may feel a lot better when you get up and as you power through the day. Stay with it and enjoy the difference.
