Increase Your Focus on Fitness

By Paul Rothbart

Fitness is one of the keys to a healthy, happy, and productive life. But it doesn't just happen. Staying fit requires commitment to working out and eating right consistently. But there is more to it than just the physical component. To reach one's highest level of fitness requires focus. In order to be fully focused, one must have specific fitness goals. Vague goals such as "getting in better shape" will not allow the kind of focus needed. Then there are all the fads. Someone is always coming out with a new type of exercise routine or piece of equipment. Some have value but many don't. It can be a tricky situation to navigate. Here are some ways to increase your focus on fitness.

Change Your Terminology

This may seem superficial, but how you refer to exercising can shift mental focus in a positive way. If you refer to your exercise sessions as "workouts," that implies a single session. You finish that workout and it's over. A term is "training." Training implies a long commitment to reach a fitness goal. You may be training to run a mile in 5 minutes, or to lose 20 pounds. In this way, your mental focus is on a long-term program to reach a specified goal.

Strength Training

Don't shy away from getting stronger. You don't have to train like a bodybuilder but increasing strength is a good thing. A leaner, more muscular body burns more fat, even when at rest. Strength protects the body and reduces risk of injury. For the ladies, you can be physically strong and still be feminine. A toned body looks better and is a boost to confidence.

Pursue Wellness

Fitness should be a lifetime activity. It's fine to start with a goal of losing a specific amount of weight or training for a road race, but what happens when that goal is reached? Individual goals are milestones on the lifelong path. The goal of wellness should always be pursued. This is a strong motivation to continue training throughout your life. The type of training will necessarily change with age, but it will continue. This is perhaps the greatest area of focus.

Avoid the Fads

Don't be so fast to buy the latest workout machine or jump on the hip technique that all the celebrities are using. Keep an eye on the trends, but do your research before deciding that any of them are better than what you are currently doing. Stick with the tried and true ways of achieving fitness and adapt your training as you reach short-term goals and get older.

Fitness is a worthy goal, but it is a lifetime journey. Staying committed and focused will enable you to reach your fitness goals, and more important, live a healthy and productive life.
