Smart Tips to Get What You Really Want

By Sandy Schroeder

Hitting key targets in your career can be satisfying or disappointing, depending on where you are. We all grow up making some assumptions about what we want. As we move through life, we may need to learn how to zero in on the major goals.

Lifehack offers a few suggestions.

Keep Your Goals in View

In the midst of daily tasks, it is easy to lose sight of that really big goal as you keep daily routines moving. Do whatever it takes to keep your goals in mind. Set aside a time each week to review progress. Take ongoing notes of ideas, classes and research needed. Talk with people who have done similar things. And always feel free to reshape the goal if something better pops up.

Enjoy the Trip

As we work toward goals, it’s smart to enjoy the scenery along the way. You may meet exciting people, take special classes, or learn a variety of skills. Bring your best to each situation and live in the moment. When you do achieve a goal, you will have some really good memories of the trip.

Start With Who You Are

You will have a better shot at your goals if you start with who you are. Consider what you like, what you do well, and what you are attracted to. Then talk to people in those fields. Do the homework to get as much information as possible. You may even want to run two parallel goals. One could be life work, and the other could be a hobby.

Stay Centered and Work Hard

People distractions and negative feedback can slow you down. Stick with positive people to get the best results. At the same time, give it your best effort. Sometimes a concentrated effort will provide the boost you need to surge ahead.

Step  Out of Your Comfort Zone

To really achieve new goals you may have to step out of your comfort zone. Reach out and ask questions. Do the research, and the follow up wherever it takes you. You may be taking special evening classes, or learning on the job. Keep your eyes open for the areas that fit you, and don’t hesitate to speak up to make connections.

Be Ready to Seize the Day

Opportunities come and go. A dear friend of mine who understands a lot about business advises staying tuned in wherever you are. Really good options do not come along every day. So keep your eyes open and be ready to jump.

Whatever you do, don’t give up. Most successful people will tell you they failed several times before they made it.
