How to Avoid Weakening Your Online Messages

By Sandy Schroeder

The next time you compose an email, text or Instagram message, take a second look before you send it to see if there is any fluff included. Fluff translates as extra modifiers, those little words that we sometimes slip in to soften our message, according to WellAndGood.com.

Words like "just," "maybe," or "sort of" often weaken our messages and subtract from the clarity of our intentions. They can make us sound weak and subtract a lot of the directness that we need to achieve.

Take out all of the fluff words and see if your messages sound clearer.

While you are at it, take a look at your latest messages and also critique them for length, appropriateness, directness and results achieved.

Is length an issue for you? - Sometimes we are so eager to communicate ideas that we let all of the details spill out in an email when it might be better to just send a topic teaser and suggest, "Let's talk." Most people look for dates, ideas and plans in messages, planning to follow up with all of the details later. If too much detail is added to the message, they may not even need to follow up.

Are your messages on target? - Scan your latest messages and decide if they were aimed at the correct audiences, or just sent out in a burst of enthusiasm. Look back in your message logs and see if you are coming up with new names and faces, and reaching people who are interesting and interactive. You may need to spend some time researching new contacts or getting leads from other good sources.

Are your messages worded for impact? - Do you lead off with the key topic and follow up with some strong questions or suggestions? Or do you find yourself backing into a topic and then rambling around the subject? Stimulating others to get involved and respond requires persuasive wording that tells them what the topic means to them and what should be happening. Take the time to sharpen your pitch to make your message really count.

Are you getting the responses you want? - As you scan your messages, are you getting quick responses with good content? Or do you find you have to resend messages and wind up calling people to get a response? If you are not getting the results that you want, you may have to do some thinking about your audience, intentions, and overall work. You may be in a rut or just need to get out there and make some new contacts to sharpen your approach.

Whatever it takes, a little attention to the details may give you the results that you want.
