Why Your Body and Mind Really Need Exercise

By Genevieve Cunningham

You’ve probably heard that exercise is important. In fact, you’ve probably heard it a hundred times or more! Exercise is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle … but why? What is it about this habit that is so beneficial? While it would take all day to completely cover the positive side effects, take a look at these reasons why exercise is good for both your body and your mind.

For the Body

These are the benefits that are the most popular, and so you’ve probably heard many of them before. But they’re still so good that they’re worth hearing again! Some of the physical benefits of exercise may include:

  • A Healthy Body Weight - We don’t like to admit it, but excess weight is so hard on the body. It leads to so many other conditions that are damaging long-term. Exercise can help to keep your weight and body fat percentage under control.

  • Improved Mobility - You like being able to move, don’t you? Of course you do! The more you exercise, the easier it is for your body to remain flexible and mobile. And the more active you are in life, the happier and more content you’re likely to be.

  • A Boost in Body Systems - Those who exercise regularly are much more likely to have stable blood pressure and blood sugar levels, a solid heart rate, balanced hormones, and general better health. Bottom line? If you want a healthy body, exercise will help.

For the Mind

While it’s easy to get caught up in the bodily benefits, there are numerous benefits of exercise that focus solely on the mind. Some of these may include:

  • Greater Concentration - Many who exercise find that their focus and concentration is renewed. It’s a little easier to pay attention and think about the task at hand.

  • Stable Moods - Exercise is a mood enhancer. If you tend to be moody or even a bit blue most of the time, adding exercise into your routine will probably help you stabilize the way that you feel every day.

  • Improvement in Memory - Study after study has shown a link between regular exercise and better memory. Will it turn you into a savant? No, of course it won’t. But it might help you remember your appointment next week or why you walked into this room in the first place.

Exercise is such an easy way to boost your health. It’s unfortunate that so many people ignore the healthy benefits! If you really want to boost your health and wellness for an entire lifetime, getting in some movement is one of the best ways to do it. Find something you like and get moving!
