How to Curb These Unhealthy Addictions

By Genevieve Cunningham

When we usually hear the word addiction, we think of the really bad stuff. We think of cigarettes. We think of drugs. We think of the things that are obvious detriments to our well-being. But the truth is that addiction comes in all forms. And unfortunately, we all have them. If you would like to get rid of as many addictions as possible in your life and boost your health at the same time, take a look at how you can beat these common unhealthy addictions for good.

The Addiction: Junk Food

Junk food is one of our favorite guilty pleasures. We love the flavor. We love the sweet and savory satisfaction. But unfortunately junk food is addictive. The more junk food we eat, the more we want to eat, and most of us give in to this craving. The problem is that junk food is also incredibly unhealthy. It's filled with oils, salt, sugar, and other unhealthy ingredients. If you want to beat the junk food addiction, start slowly. Cut out one food at a time, replacing it with something healthier. It might take a while to drop the addiction completely, but the effects will be well worth it.

The Addiction: Screen Time

Addiction to the screen may very well be one of the biggest addiction problems in society today. We really love our screen time. From the TV to laptops to phones, we spend massive amounts of time in front of the screen on a daily basis. Why is this a problem? Because it's damaging both our physical and mental well-being. In order to reverse it, we simply must limit our screen time and replace it with some form of physical activity. This will take some self-discipline, but once the positive effects show up, it will get easier and easier to avoid.

The Addiction: Inactivity

The power of doing nothing. While it might seem that doing nothing would be incredibly boring, it's actually really addictive. At first, sitting around watching TV, playing video games, or scrolling through Facebook feels like a treat. Over time, we begin to become aware of the stiff joints, sore back, and weight gain. But for some reason, we just can't break it. The longer we remain inactive, the harder it becomes to break the habit. What can we do? Incorporate activity into our habits. Download a workout app, buy an active video game, or watch (and perform) yoga on the TV. Slowly acclimate your body into a more active lifestyle, and don't stop until constant inactivity is far behind you.

Addictions, no matter what they are, are really tough to break. But getting control of them might make all the difference in your overall health. Break these common unhealthy addictions, and you’ll have your health moving in the right direction in no time.
