CrossFit and Chiropractic Care: An Athlete’s Best Friend
By Debra Rodzinak
With more than 5,000 CrossFit affiliates worldwide, the CrossFit craze is growing by leaps and bounds! Chances are you know someone, have met someone, or are someone who is a CrossFit junkie. These athletes are serious; they will change their lifestyles, if necessary, to accommodate their CrossFit training schedule. While CrossFit is great exercise and can even be addictive, there is a downside. Athletes are often sore and may experience tight, knotted muscles as well as more serious training injuries. When these problems occur, CrossFit athletes may need professional care.
If I’m a CrossFit athlete, why would I want to use a chiropractor?
CrossFit is a high-intensity workout program that varies from day to day. The workout of the day, or WOD as CrossFit enthusiasts call it, focuses on specific muscle regions of the body. If you perform a WOD every day for two weeks, you will not perform the same routine twice. This provides a high-intensity workout that produces excellent results.
With this constant stress on changing muscle groups, a CrossFit athlete often has some form of soreness at any given time. With combined elements of weightlifting cardio work, and core training, the athletic performance of a CrossFit athlete usually improves tremendously. However, injury is also common among CrossFit athletes who do not “listen” to their bodies.
How can regular chiropractic care improve my performance?
A 2011 study in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine in Science and Sports stated, “This study demonstrated that fundamental movement characteristics do change with a standardized intervention.” Standardized intervention, such as chiropractic care, can improve balance, agility, reaction time, and power in athletes.
It is an unpleasant reality that in any CrossFit box, the name commonly given to a CrossFit gym, peer competition causes some participants to push themselves beyond their physical limits resulting in injury. When chiropractic care is custom designed for the CrossFit athlete, the joints, muscles, and nerves that are pushed to the limit on a daily basis become balanced, fire correctly, and fight off injury.
What if I am already injured from my CrossFit workout?
When the body is injured, pain and discomfort can cause improper movement during exercise. A chiropractor can evaluate the area of injury or discomfort, suggest certain treatments to repair the injury, and carry out those treatments quickly and effectively to get the patient back to daily WODs.
