Babies and Colic: Parents are Crying for Help

Being a new parent can be scary, trying, and exhausting. Now add hours of constant crying due to painful colic. Many parents routinely run back to their child’s pediatrician only to be given a medication that doesn’t work or treatments that don’t eliminate the problem but merely mask the pain for a few hours. In a study of 316 infants with chronic colic (crying that lasts 5 or more hours a day), chiropractors adjusted the spines in an attempt to elevate the discomfort and bring the entire family some peace.

How Was the Study Conducted?

Each mother was provided a journal to keep track of the symptoms of their baby. Intensity, length, and discomfort of the child was documented. During a four-week period of chiropractic treatment, the symptoms of the colic were written down. The average number of treatments during the first two weeks was three adjustments with continued adjustments following weekly for up to one month.

The Results 

Within 14 days of gentle adjustments by a chiropractor, 94 percent of the babies showed improvements. The 94 percent success rate was maintained after one month. In fact, after four weeks the report states that improvements were found in all children. This is all without the use of any drugs! One out of four infants showed marked improvement after just the first adjustment. The remaining children showed improvement within 14 days.

Case Study

In another study, an 11-month-old child was diagnosed with severe, complicated, late onset infantile colic. Suffering from severe constipation and unable to eat solid foods for four months, the child was experiencing muscle weakness, and unable to crawl or walk. Even after being under excellent medical supervision at Rochester Medical Clinic, his condition was not improving.

Chiropractors administered adjustments to his first cervical vertebrae (the one closest to the head). Immediate improvements in the child’s ability to consume solid foods, coordination, and muscle strength were documented. The parents were elated that after numerous attempts to cure their child, success was realized without the need for drugs or hospitalization.
