No, Sciatica Is Not the Name of a Town

By Donna Stark

If you close your eyes and forget everything you know about sciatica, you could almost believe that it is the name of a beautiful, peaceful, little town in upstate New York. It certainly has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? Sciatica, New York. Unfortunately though, there really isn’t anything nice or peaceful about sciatica at all. In fact, it conjures up feelings and images that are quite the opposite. Sciatica is a persistent and severe pain that originates in the spine and extends down the back of the leg. For those who suffer from it, it can be excruciating and debilitating.

Let’s Start From the Beginning

The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body and consists of five smaller nerves that join together and travel down the back of each leg. Its purpose is to provide strength and nerve sensation to the legs and to also connect the leg’s major muscles to the spinal cord. Muscle weakness, numbness, and pain is often the result if there is ever an issue with the sciatic nerve. In fact, the pain can be so bad that it is often difficult to stand, sit, walk, and even sleep.

Treatments for Sciatica

As horrible as sciatica sounds, this condition is actually quite common, affecting millions of people each year in the United States alone. Traditional healthcare usually treats this condition with time and painkillers, as most cases resolve themselves within a couple of weeks. But the end result with choosing that path is that the patient's liver, kidney, or stomach are at an increased risk of damage due to the long-term use of drugs, such as anti-inflammatories, narcotics, muscle relaxers, and even anti-depressants. If a patient has a more severe case, surgery is often recommended as well.

Chiropractic Care: The Better Approach

Avoid the use of drugs and the invasive procedures in your quest to finding pain relief. The better approach to treating sciatica is the chiropractic one, and here’s why:

  • The source of the pain will be treated
  • Proper spinal alignment helps to take the pressure off of the sciatic nerve
  • Reduces inflammation and alleviates pain
  • Promotes improved, lifelong health of the spine
  • No risk of addiction to medication
  • No risks from invasive procedures
  • Allows your body to heal itself naturally
