Tension Headaches: A Chiropractic Answer

By Sara Butler

You might be one of the millions of Americans who suffer from tension headaches every year, and if you are, then you know how incredibly inconvenient and annoying they can be. When it comes to headaches, turning to your chiropractor may not be your first thought – but it should be! Many times the root of a tension headache is something your chiropractor can help to uncover and treat. Here’s a little more information about tension headaches and how your chiropractor might be able to help!

What is a Tension Headache?

Tension headaches are defined as a condition that involves pain and discomfort of the neck, head, or scalp. It’s normally accompanied by muscle tension in these areas as well, which can lead to feeling like your head is in a vice. Tension headaches are incredibly, and very unfortunately, common. If you suffer from them regularly, as in one to two times a week for several months, they are then considered chronic.

The Chiropractic Connection

Tension headaches are thought to result from a muscle contraction in the head and neck. Often, these muscle contractions are triggered by stress, anxiety, and even depression. But, they can also be a result of a misalignment of one or more of the bones in your spine.

Another cause of tension headaches is as a result of a poor posture. If you hold your head at a certain angle for too long, such as when you’re texting on your cell phone, this can lead to headaches that may then become chronic. It can also be the result of sitting in one posture at your computer or sleeping with your neck in an improper position all night long.

Whatever the reason you’re experiencing these headaches, you can count on your chiropractor to help you uncover the reason behind them. Once they are able to determine why they’re happening, then you can work together on a treatment plan. Spinal adjustments may be able to help relieve your symptoms and fix the underlying cause of the headaches too!

Who Gets Tension Headaches?

Women are about two times more likely to experience tension headaches than men. According to the National Institutes of Health, about 80 percent of adults in the United States suffer from tension headaches, with about 3 percent experiencing a chronic problem.
