How to Keep Your Halloween Healthier
By Genevieve Cunningham
It's almost Halloween, which for many people is very exciting. Lots of people enjoy the chilly nights and spooky atmosphere. And almost everyone enjoys the delicious goodies! Of course, we don’t necessarily love the weight that comes along with it. Weight gain at this time of year is incredibly common. And incredibly frustrating. If you’re interested in enjoying the Halloween and fall vibe without packing on the pounds, take a look at these tips for keeping it a little healthier this year.
Make Your Own Treats
If you make your own Halloween treats, you can control the ingredients. Store-bought treats are likely filled with sugar and calories, which won’t help you keep off the weight. But if you get creative (Hello, Pinterest!), you may be able to create your own goodies with fewer calories and healthier ingredients. And if you have kids, they’ll likely have a blast helping you do it!
Set a Time Limit
For some people, skipping Halloween candy is not an option. If that’s you, that’s OK. But it’s probably better if you set a time limit on the candy consumption. Instead of eating candy and goodies all month long, allow yourself a span of one day or one week or somewhere in between. When the time us up, throw extra goodies out and get back into your healthy eating.
Get Involved in Every Other Aspect
If you want to get in the Halloween spirit, but you really don’t want to gain weight, it’s possible to simply throw yourself into another aspect of the season. Instead of focusing on goodies, create the best costumes you’ve ever made. Or throw yourself into decorations. Or help plan the party at church or your local community group. Sometimes it’s not the candy we want as much as the feelings that come with it. Find another way to get involved, and you may be able to enjoy the holiday without the sugar.
Halloween and the fall -- it’s such a fun time of year! But it can also be unhealthy if we’re not diligent in our healthy habits. Use these tips to keep your holiday (and the whole fall season!) healthier this year. You may be surprised at how much you enjoy the fun without the extra goodies (or weight!) at the end.
