Healthy Brain, Happy Life: 3 Tips for Brain Health

By Genevieve Cunningham

When we think about the health of the brain, we usually think of it in the context of aging, disease, or injury. When the brain is healthy and functioning properly, we don't really give it much thought at all. We don't worry about it or think about how to make it healthier. But just like every other part of the body, the brain needs preventative care. It needs regular thought and attention if we want it to function at its best and last for the rest of our lives. But what does that look like? If you're interested in long-term brain health, take a look at these tips to start right away.

Stay Engaged

The brain likes to be active. It likes to be challenged. When we stop using our brains, when we stop working them, we start to lose them. So how do we keep the brain engaged? We keep learning and trying new things. Do you have a hobby that requires a little concentration? If not, find one! Or try learning a new skill. Or continue to do puzzles and riddles and brain games. Keeping the brain active isn't difficult; it just takes intentional activity. Keep it engaged, and you'll be keeping it much healthier in the long run.

Stick to Checkups

If you're not regularly seeing your doctor for checkups, it's time to start. Doctors aren't only for healing sickness. They're also there for prevention. If you see your doctor regularly, they can give you tips for staying younger -- including how to keep the brain healthy and engaged. They can also help spot any potential problems and keep you moving toward better overall health on a regular basis.

Eat Well

Eating junk isn't good for the body, and it's not good for the brain either. If you want to be healthy -- whether that's in the body, brain or both -- you have to eat well. Stock your kitchen with fruit and vegetables. Eliminate excess sugar and junk food. Drink plenty of water. The healthier your diet, the healthier your body overall will be, and this definitely includes the health and longevity of your brain.

Keeping the brain healthy is an important job. We only get one brain, and if we don't take care of it, it may deteriorate over time. Don't let it! Use these tips to help keep your brain healthy, and enjoy a sharp memory and solid cognitive skills for years to come.
