4 Ways to Remain Calm and Just Keep Winning

By Sandy Schroeder

We all know someone who always remains calm and does well in most situations. I have worked with extremely successful people who have developed key strategies to fight stress.

But the best answers may come from Dr. Travis Bradberry, co-founder of TalentSmart, an agency that services many Fortune 500 companies. He says 90 percent of the top performers know how to manage their emotions, remaining calm when chaos surrounds them. Intermittent stress can motivate. But unrelenting stress defeats work performance, and often leads to obesity, depression and heart disease.

Here are some key stress-fighting strategies from the top performers.

Get some sleep – Remaining clear-headed and energetic is so much easier when you are sleeping well. If you have to rely on caffeine to power you through the day, you may need to cut back and develop more regular hours. Make your room a sleep haven and leave the electronics outside. Keep the room cool, quiet and serene with light-blocking drapes, and an air filter to provide white noise. Your brain needs the chance to recharge to maximize your attention, memory and self-control.

Skip the negative dialogue – A friend of mine always says if you don’t ask, the answer is no. If you insist on always seeing the down side, you may be telling yourself no. When you start to have negative thoughts, write them down. Then review them point by point to separate fact from fiction. If you keep doing this, you may develop a calmer more level perspective that assesses situations as they arise, and usually find good solutions.

Just breathe – When stress hovers, close the door or step outside to find a quiet spot. Sit down, close your eyes, and just breathe, letting go of everything. As you focus on your breath, you might picture a favorite spot in your garden or at the beach. After a few minutes, open your eyes and look around. Often the stress will have lifted.

Look around and smile – When one event after another makes it hard to remain calm, look around and count your blessings. Your family, friends, and skills are worth noting, and enjoying. Take it a step further, and tell the people in your life just how important they are, and launch a new project that you have been considering. Life may be a whole lot better than you thought.

The biggest secret of the top performers who always remain calm may be their willingness to pause and reflect. Often we have the answers right in front of us. We just need to take a deep breath and look.
