Finding Ways to Boost Happiness

By Brandi Goodman

Your mental health can suffer if you're constantly feeling stressed with life. Find ways to boost your happiness so you can improve your mood and your mental well-being. Start with just one thing on this list in the beginning so you don't become overwhelmed trying to take on too much as that would defeat the purpose.

Give Your Time to Others

One way to make yourself happy is to make others happy. Give your time to others by volunteering and you may soon see how good it can feel to help those around you. You'll be making people smile, which can help you to smile as well. Take some meals to a homeless shelter or volunteer to serve dinner at a soup kitchen. Join a community planting project or help clean up trash around a local park. Many ways exist to give your time.

Take in the Beauty Around You

Go for a walk along a trail and you'll see trees, flowers, and plants surrounding you. Take in the beauty that this world has to offer and it can help you to gain a new perspective. You and your problems are not the only thing in this world. It is big and beautiful and you are simply a part of it. Treasure the sights you're seeing and let them lift your cares away.

Start Each Day Fresh

Too many people go into a new day with the same stresses of yesterday. Forget these troubles and start each day fresh. Begin your morning telling yourself that this is a new day and it's going to be a great one. This new day has every opportunity to be amazing if you let it and believe it will.

Write About What Makes You Happy

Every time you experience something that makes you happy, write about it. Keep a notebook by your bedside, in your car, in the living room, and anywhere else you frequent so you always have the chance to record those happy moments. You'll then always be able to look back at the things you enjoy and realize how lucky you are to be alive. When the sun shines through the window and you feel that sunshine on your face, write it down. When you meet with a friend and they make you laugh from the depths of your stomach until it hurts, write it down. When you taste that first sip of your favorite flavor of coffee in the morning, write it down. All of these moments are special and worth remembering.

Boost your happiness and the happiness of others around you and you're bound to experience better mental health. Trying to focus on the joys in life rather than the despair can help prevent mental struggles that take their toll on not just the mind but also the body.
