Road Trip: Here's How to Prevent Back Pain

By Virginia Laird

With the excitement of spring break staring at you, it can begin to be exciting to plan a quick road trip getaway. Although the trip itself will be fun, there are many who will struggle with back pain along the way. Chiropractors suggest that back pain, while traveling, is much like an uninvited guest. It can get super annoying real fast. Rather than having it put your trip in slow motion, chiropractors suggest there are a few things you can do to help eliminate such pain. These tips include:

  • Get out and get moving
  • Get plenty of sleep before your trip
  • Visit your chiropractor before hitting the road

Get Out and Get Moving

One of the biggest problems with a road trip is the inability to get up and move when you need to. Chiropractors admit that sitting for too long can be a source of back pain. Research suggests that to prevent back pain, it is best to get up and get out of the car every couple of hours during a road trip. During these stops you should get out of the car, stretch your back and legs. Chiropractors suggest that planning your stops where you can walk through a store or a roadside park can be helpful in preventing back pain too. Before you hit the road, make sure to allow for these types of stops.

Get Plenty of Sleep Before Your Trip

Research suggests that where there is a lack of sleep, there is an increased tendency to experience back pain. For this reason, chiropractors recommend that you make it a priority to get plenty of sleep before your road trip. Although you may be one who falls asleep in the car, this will not be the most comfortable sleep you can get. It is advised that you get at least six hours of uninterrupted sleep on a daily basis. While this can be a struggle from time to time, it is imperative to do this before your road trip.

Visit Your Chiropractor Before Hitting the Road

Chiropractors suggest that another tip for preventing back pain is to begin routine chiropractic care. Chiropractors use small adjustments to the joints of the spine to release tension and restriction. Although you may be unaware, the joints of the spine are constantly shifting, causing restriction. While there are some who never experience pain, there are plenty who struggle to find relief. Traveling with such pain can put a damper on your vacation plans. Rather than being stuck in a chair for your entire trip  because moving is too painful, drop by The Joint Chiropractic for an adjustment. With more than 450 locations nationwide you are sure to find one in your community. And with no appointment necessary, getting started on your routine care can be as easy as stopping by at your earliest convenience.
