Beach Tips for the Entire Family
By Lana Bandoim
After months of planning and wishing for perfect weather, a trip to the beach is finally a reality. The kids have new swimsuits, the snacks are packed, and extra sunscreen is in all the bags. However, before you take over the beach and flood social media with selfies, consider these tips.
Pack the Right Things
Sunscreen, water and snacks are not the only things that have to be packed. If the kids are coming to the beach, then the bags also need to include toys and games. Extra clothes and extra beach towels are necessary. Bring a first aid kit and make sure it includes allergy or other medications.
Keep food and water in a cooler with ice. The kids will not want to drink hot soda or water that tastes like lava. Also, make sure the cooler stays closed, so sand does not get inside to ruin the food.
Use Sunscreen
Sunscreen is required even if you plan to hide under an umbrella during the entire trip to the beach. The sun’s rays can penetrate clothes and umbrellas. Use sunscreen with a high SPF and reapply it often. Make sure it provides protection from both UVA and UVB rays.
Plan How to Carry Everything
How will you carry the towels, toys, food, water and other items from the car to beach? Although stuffing things into oversized bags may work, they can fill with sand and create a mess. Consider getting a rolling cart designed for the sand to carry everything.
Be Prepared for Sunburns
Sunscreen may not protect everyone from sunburns, and it can wash off in the water. Make sure you have a plan for handling burns at the beach. Bring aloe vera lotion or other treatment options. Consider packing plain yogurt in a cooler because it can be applied to damaged skin.
Put Away the Electronics
Not only can electronics be destroyed by sand and water, they can also distract the family from enjoying the beach. Put away the phones and tablets for a couple of hours to play in the sand or water. Turn off notifications and resist the urge to take hundreds of selfies. Use a digital camera that is not attached to a phone to capture the memories.
Visiting the beach can be one of the best parts of summer. Consider these tips before your trip, and the experience will be better.
