Caregiver Stress Brings Harmful Health Effects

By Brandi Swieter

Stress can be felt by anyone for any reason, but caregivers looking after loved ones tend to feel it a considerable amount of the time. They are responsible for another person’s well-being and have to handle not only their own daily tasks, but the person they’re caring for as well. Caregiver stress can bring on many harmful health effects, leaving people unable to perform their job duties as intended.

Obesity

One of the primary effects brought on by caregiver stress is obesity. This effect is particularly true in women who seem to gain weight easily when their bodies become overstressed and overworked. With obesity comes a slew of other health problems, such as diabetes and heart disease.

Chronic Diseases

Stress can take a major toll on the body, leaving it vulnerable to illness and diseases. People who routinely suffer from stress are more likely to develop a chronic disease. Arthritis pain may start in, cancer can develop, and heart disease can take over. Getting stress levels under control may be the only way to prevent these things from developing or symptoms from worsening.

Depression

One of the major concerns for caregivers is the likelihood of developing depression. With too much stress on the mind and body, women in particular tend to become depressed and even anxious. They fall into a slump and find it hard to come out of it. Depression is yet another problem that can lead to further worries, such as stroke, making it necessary to get it taken care of as soon as symptoms are noticed.

Body Aches and Headaches

People often report feeling tension in their neck and head when they feel stressed. The weight of the world seems to literally be on their shoulders, putting pain into certain areas of the body. The extra tension can turn into even more stress on a person’s mind and body, thus resulting in further health effects.

Caregivers experience a considerable amount of stress on a daily basis. With so much to do and plan for themselves and the person they care for, there is little time left for self-care. Caregivers need to take care of themselves first, taking time regularly to sit and relax for at least a short while. Sit down with a good book or simply curl up in front of the TV. Either option can work wonders for a person’s overall health. It is also wise to visit a chiropractic at The Joint to help to destress the body and ensure all the aches and tension felt in the muscles and joints get relieved.
