Joint Pain: Keep Your Body in Motion

By Stephen R. Farris

When we suffer from joint pain, it can be excruciating at times. In order to relieve the pain we may hit the medicine cabinet for pain relievers, or sit down in hopes that it'll ease up or go away. Unfortunately for most of us, the pain lingers on.

If joint pain reaches a certain point, we may find ourselves sitting or lying down more than we should since being still feels best to us. But that's not exactly what we should be doing. Studies show that joint pain, remaining active in some form or fashion is best.

There are several things you can do for joint pain, but one method you might try is exercise. Yes, it's probably the last thing on your mind when seeking joint pain relief, but it's actually much better than taking pills every six to eight hours.

Make Time for Exercise

It doesn't have to be a one- or two-hour intense workout. Just a few minutes a day can make a difference. So make a little time in your daily schedule to include exercising. Take a short walk, or do some stretches at home.

Little Things Matter

Ever heard the old saying, it's the little things in life that matter? It's true, except in the case of joint pain, it's the little things we can do throughout the workday that can make a difference. Make a few changes at the job in case you don't have enough time to get in a workout before or after work. Park as far from the entrance as possible, so you can exercise your legs before sitting down at your desk. Skip the elevator ride and take the stairs. When you're on the phone, do some stretching exercises while you talk. If your city has them, take advantage of bike lanes by riding to work on your bicycle if you have one instead of driving to work. There are lots of ways to help you remain active throughout the day and keep your joints moving.

Grab a Friend

If keeping motivated seems to put a dent in staying active, find a friend or family member that will exercise with you. Chances are, both of you could end up motivating the other.

It Was a Dark and Cold Morning

Last, but not least, don't let darkness or inclement weather keep you from skipping workouts. As mentioned before, there are indoor activities you can do to temporarily replace your outdoor ones.
