Easy Ways to Make Working Out Fun

By Stepy Kamei

You no doubt know that working out is one of the most important things you can do to improve your overall physical and mental health. Countless studies have proven that people who work out regularly tend to enjoy a vast range of benefits from increased energy and better sleep to lower levels of stress, depression, and chronic aches and pains. Still, it can be challenging to work up the motivation to get to a gym in the first place. Many people ultimately find that finding ways to make working out fun can make a huge difference in whether they'll continue going to the gym or not. Keep on reading to pick up some useful tips on how you can actually make going to the gym a fun experience to look forward to, rather than a chore to dread.

Use the Buddy System

In this instance, the buddy system involves enlisting the help of your close friends in order to motivate yourself to get to the gym. You may keep finding excuses to avoid working out if it's just you that you need to answer to. However, if you start up a gym membership or a series of weekly classes with at least one friend, you now have a standing obligation to that person as well! Try setting up weekly workout sessions or jogs through the local park to start, and see what other fitness-related commitments you can create with a like-minded friend over time.

Create a Reward for Yourself

Many people find themselves more excited to try something out if they know there will be a reward for them at the end of it. This approach may work for you as well! Make a promise to yourself that if you hit the gym for 30 minutes tomorrow, you'll treat yourself to your favorite dessert that night. Continue to up the rewards for more serious commitments -- for example, attending the gym at least three times a week for two weeks means you can splurge on something you've had your eye on for a while. Or signing up for a 10-week fitness class (and following through with the class) means you can take yourself on a mini weekend getaway when it's done!

Visualize Your Future Self

Many people have said that simply envisioning a future version of themselves where they're in shape, more energized, and healthier is enough of a reward to convince themselves to stick with a regular fitness routine. Try closing your eyes and imagining how proud and happy you'll feel after hitting the gym on a consistent basis for three, or even six, months from today. Honor that future for yourself by committing to achieving it in the present!
